First Aid & Aquatic Leadership Changes – Effective June 22, 2026

1. What is changing on June 22, 2026?

Ontario’s Workplace First Aid Program is being updated to align with new provincial and national standards. As a result, the Lifesaving Society is making changes to how First Aid is named, delivered, and required for Aquatic Leadership programs.

2. Why are the names of First Aid courses changing?

To align with standardized terminology:

  • Emergency First Aid (EFA) is now called Basic First Aid
  • Standard First Aid (SFA) is now called Intermediate First Aid

3.  What is the course duration?

Basic First Aid requires a minimum of 8 hours for completion

Intermediate First Aid requires a minimum of 16 hours for completion

4. Is First Aid still included in Aquatic Leadership courses?

Yes, The Town of Whitby will continue to offer the new First Aid Programs within its Lifesaving Society Aquatic Leadership courses.

5. What First Aid is required for Aquatic Leadership programs?

Intermediate First Aid (formerly Standard First Aid) will now be offered as part of the National Lifeguard Course.

6. Do I need to retake First Aid if I already have Emergency or Standard First Aid?

No. If you currently hold a valid Emergency First Aid or Standard First Aid certificate, it will be recognized until it expires.

Once expired, a full course must be completed under the new First Aid course format.

7. How does this benefit candidates?

These changes ensure:

  • Clear, consistent First Aid standards across Ontario
  • Dedicated time focused solely on First Aid skills
  • Leadership courses can concentrate fully on supervision, rescue, and decision-making skills

This better prepares candidates for real‑world aquatic leadership roles.

8. Who does this effect?

These changes apply to:

  • New candidates entering Aquatic Leadership programs
  • Returning candidates whose First Aid certification has expired
  • Employers and facilities requiring compliant Leadership certifications
